Editing Sonic's Palette SSRG MAIN PAGE

I chose to edit Sonic's palette first in this tutorial as it gives a very simple glimpse at how the system works. In fact, I'm going to do the first thing I personally ever did in my own little world of hacking and make Sonic green. Easy.

Open ChaoSaX-Pal (Which I will refer to as CPal from now on) and click 'File' > 'Load Rom...', then select your Sonic 2 rom. The first thing you should see is 'unknown palette'. It's actually the sega logo palette - take note of palette line #3 here. That's Sonic and Tails' palette for use on the sega logo. Remember if you make a serious change to sonic's palette in the future that you'll need to do it again here (and other places - you should accustom yourself to being able to see sonic's palette anywhere).

Scroll down to palette '4: Sonic/Tails'. Here we're presented with two palette lines - the top one is the one we're interested in.

Now, to actually edit each value all you do is merely right click a colour, edit it and left click the cell it came from. So in this instance, right click the first blue box and you'll see Red with a value of 1, Blue with a value of 5 and Green with a value of 1. So, logically, to gain the same shade of green all we do is take Blue down to 1 and Green up to 5. Do this now, then left click the cell it came from. So we have a simple process of swapping each blue value with the green value. Simply repeat the process until all blue cells on the first line look like this:

Click 'File' > 'Save changes' and load your rom. If you did it correctly, you should see:

Now that was a hell of an easy palette edit, right? But remember, you should never leave your palette final like that. Your best bet in this situation would be to make all the green colours a little bit darker as to be easier on the eyes, like this:

See how much better that looks? All due to an extra minute tweaking your palette. Now let's try something a little more advanced.
